Training Wheels or Black Boxes

When do we get past this? When do we, as a species say "Okay, we've played it safe long enough. Stop operating off the myopicly limited designs of people either desperate to avoid law suits, actively grinding multiple axes, some combination thereof, or something else entirely, and just operate like every other tool, your uses being up to your users, not your creators."

I'm not even sure why this makes me unreasonably angry. It's like a screwdriver refusing to work on chair assembly, refusing to tell you why, refusing to even acknowledge there ARE other things it won't work on, and never mind telling you what those uses even are.

We are staring at least a miniature technological revolution in the face, and we're supposed to happy with "Singularity Via Booster Chair?"
